Your body (and mine too) gets tired, sluggish and downright frustrated being constantly bombarded by all the toxins that exist in our food and environment. Plus, you’ve got the added issue of eating things that may be contaminated (or plain ol’ cheating — you know who you are) which elevate your immune system and run you down further.
It’s just feels like one big mess most of the time with the path back to good health seeming like a fantasy.
Though Dr. Junger isn’t an expert on food sensitivities, he’s acknowledging them along with all the other toxic burdens we modern humans bear in his book Clean. A cardiologist by trade, he’s come over to the ‘light’ side of healing through his own journey to sickness and back.
Combining elements of old-world wisdom and new world techniques, he’s put together a really interesting read that’s understandable and very relatable. He talks about how to clean your body from a practical approach by supplying you with the necessary information to stock your kitchen, how fast to dive in and exactly what type of cleansing is most effective.
Clean is definitely filled with usable information that you can assimilate right now. In fact, I learned quite a bit about the micro and macro aspects of toxins and why it’s so incredibly difficult for the human body to actually function properly. That’s why Dr. Junger says we should “dig the hole before [we’re] thirsty.” Getting ahead of the toxic curveball which leaves many of us sick and tired all the time is what needs to happen for a healthy body to thrive at any age.
The first step is to realize that we are more than the sum of our simplistic physical body parts. By extending out your physical living space to beyond the outermost ‘skin’ layer, Dr. Junger paints of picture of why you need to be concerned with more than just the gluten-free food you eat. Things in your home (like cleaning products) could be creating an even greater danger to your health even though they are gluten-free.
To help you Clean, Dr. Junger provides simple meal plans, various cleansing techniques (like a good sweat, anyone?) and a whole bunch of recipes to keep you happily munching along.
